Information about environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics is no longer a "nice to have", instead it's an indispensable consideration across every business decision being made.

Tell us about your role, and what your day-to-day looks like

My role as an Engineering Manager is to analyze, design and develop high-quality products required by our customers. It is technical work that includes writing code, code reviews, project estimations, teamwork, and implementing best engineering practices across teams. Excellent people management skills and a deep understanding of the product and business context are also very important.

My day-to-day also involves collaborating with product managers and business teams, as well as recruitment and coaching of my team.

Why did you decide to join Preqin?

I am always keen to learn, and working at Preqin has helped me to gain an understanding of the alternative assets industry. I was also attracted by the amazing work culture and the company's D&I policies. One of the best things about Preqin is that new ideas are heard, brainstormed, and implemented! The work-life balance is just perfect.

What hard and soft skills do you think are essential for a career in Engineering?

In today's world, a large part of an engineer's job is identifying problems and finding solutions. This requires good technical knowledge and competencies, sound coding abilities, analytical skills, and a desire to keep up-to-date with new technical trends.

Also certain soft skills, like communicating complex technical solutions in a way that your stakeholders understand, are increasingly important. I would encourage everyone to be creative and highly adaptable. Collaboration is also key to ensure teams are on the same page and tasks get done efficiently. Finally, leadership skills are very valuable, especially when you're managing and mentoring a team.

How do you think the ESG landscape is evolving?

Information about environmental, social and governance metrics is no longer a "nice to have", instead it's an indispensable consideration across every business decision being made. There is a strong push from stakeholders to disclose various initiatives businesses are taking to address ESG issues. It’s increasingly clear that responsibility for ESG practices must become embedded across every level of the organization. The range of ESG issues that investors look at continues to grow, encompassing diverse aspects such as carbon emissions, water, board diversity, employee metrics etc.

What career advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in Engineering?

To have an engineering mindset! Be curious and don’t be afraid to fail. Embrace your responsibilities and never stop learning. There are plenty of resources out there to constantly upgrade and fine tune the required skills. Use every platform as an opportunity to learn something new and keep an open mind. Focus on creating the right network that helps you to work smart.
