Southeast Asia 2021

Alternatives Assets in Asia-Pacific Southeast Asia Report Cover

Alternative assets in Southeast Asia marched towards several new records in 2021. The ASEAN-focused private equity & venture capital industry reached a new high of $37bn as of December 2020, more than doubling in five years. This upward trend can be traced to the amount of capital secured by ASEAN-focused PEVC funds, reaching a peak of $9.6bn in 2019.

Venture capital deal activity in Southeast Asia is soaring as well. In 2020, 407 venture transactions were completed in the region, valued at a combined $8.2bn. Despite the uncertain deal-making environment brought on by the pandemic, this sum is the second-highest figure in the past 10 years and just shy of the previous record of $8.8bn traded in 2018.
